Artist Statement (475 characters or less - this is about 70 words)
Empire vs. Shalom addresses social injustice and the widening wealth gap produced by consumer-driven systems. A cityscape built from recycled credit cards forms a glossy, futuristic empire inhabited by gouache-painted homeless figures rendered in grayscale, appearing as visual “glitches.” Referencing Deuteronomy’s call to self-sacrifice, the work critiques how consumer culture builds shiny fortresses while pushing vulnerable people to the margins, erasing responsibility.
